Shortly after Lisa's baby shower, my new friend Jan (Lisa's sister - fantastic chick) asked me to make a cake for the teacher she works with, Mr. Y.  Jan works with special needs kids as a guidance counselor in a higher school - one of those jobs, like a nurse, that I think is highly underpaid and under recognized.  She wanted to get him something special to show her appreciation.  Apparently, Mr. Y likes his Coke very much - I think Jan said he has at least one every day.
I heard later that Mr. Y was so happy with his cake that he sent pictures of it out to the whole school!

This week started with 2 dozen pretty pink cupcakes to celebrate Jan's soon-to-arrive baby girl.  Congratulations Janizelle!  More cupcakes followed later in the week when my friend Olga requested some Elmo cupcakes to bring to dinner as a surprise for her friend's son.  The week ended with a slightly bigger project.  Beth, who's been known to request such awesome projects as the #10 cupcakes and the crawling from the grave cake, asked if I would make a cake that looks like some Palm Bay spritz for her two friends who were turning 29....again.  I figured the best way to recreate something, is to have it in front of you.  So, I took the difficult task upon myself and bought a 6 pack of the cans, then proceeded to do my research on the balcony.  They're pretty tasty!
Inside the fondant covered cakes are 8 layers of chocolate cake with yummy French vanilla buttercream sandwiched in between.

So this week's challenge came in the form of a last minute request for a friend's Father-in-law's 50th birthday.  I could hear the blush in her voice when she asked me to make a cake in the shape of a bare woman's torso.  I've made some adult themed chocolates in the past, but this was the first R-rated cake I've ever worked on.  I giggled my way through it, and I thought of my Uncle Tom the whole time!  I won't be posting any pictures of this cake because I've shown my young niece how to find this blog.  I'm a bad enough example as it is, without giving her and her little brother access to inappropriate cake pictures!  If you're curious, drop me an email and I'll be happy to send you a picture of the cake <giggle>.

My friend Maggie is in town visiting from Hong Kong and wanted to surprise a friend of hers with a birthday cake.  The cake initially started as a camera, but then changed into a hot tub as her friend had recently been working on repairing one for a local community.  Learning from my past hot tub experience, I asked the client if she wanted a round or square hot tub.  Maggie said square, which would make my niece happy.  After making the last hot tub for my niece's birthday, I asked her if she liked her cake.  Her reply was "It's great Auntie, but I thought it was going to be square".  Sorry kiddo!  The big difference between this cake and the last one is that I hand crafted the figures out of fondant/gumpaste.

This week I got to try my hand at my first bottle-shaped cake.  I decided it would be a good idea to actually have the item I was trying to recreate on hand - for reference purposes of course- (it worked with the PS3 controller!) so I brought some Labatt Ice home with me.  Research included me studying the label intently as the contents somehow disappeared...  Next time I think more research is in order!  I also made some super cute Bumble Balls for a super cute couple's anniversary.
