Happy 18th Taylor! 04/22/2012
About 3 month's ago, a neighbor in the building (Dawn - a sweetheart!) bumped into me in the parking lot while I was hauling supplies in. She made she that I knew her daughter wanted one of my cakes for her birthday in April. I had made Taylor's 16th birthday cake and everyone loved it. I bumped into Dawn a few times before the party and she kept making sure I was available for her daughter's cake - how cute! Taylor picked the designed - wanting a three tiered cake with a leopard design in hot colours! The top tie is a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, the middle is red velvet with cream cheese icing and the bottom is devil's food chocolate with vanilla buttercream. I bumped into one of the party go-ers, and she let me know how much everyone loved the cakes - made my day!! Add Comment Shortly after Lisa's baby shower, my new friend Jan (Lisa's sister - fantastic chick) asked me to make a cake for the teacher she works with, Mr. Y. Jan works with special needs kids as a guidance counselor in a higher school - one of those jobs, like a nurse, that I think is highly underpaid and under recognized. She wanted to get him something special to show her appreciation. Apparently, Mr. Y likes his Coke very much - I think Jan said he has at least one every day. I heard later that Mr. Y was so happy with his cake that he sent pictures of it out to the whole school! Happy Birthday Jessie-Girl! 10/02/2011
It was my niece's third birthday and she decided to have a tea party! My favourite cakes to make are always the cakes for the kids....from hot tubs to sleep over parties, to swimming pools, the cakes are always fun and I get to let my creativity flow! Plus, no one could have bigger fans that I have in my family. It's nice to enjoy the Ooohhhs and the Aaahhhh during the party, not just at the door when I drop the cake off. The cake and cupcakes are devil's food chocolate with vanilla icing. All of the little treats are made out of fondant (though in retrospect it would have been easier to just buy the mini cookies) and everything is 100% edible. Chocolate for Dad 05/22/2011
We celebrated my Dad's retirement (and 65th birthday, shhh) this year with a fantastic dinner, good company and some cake and ice cream! My Dad loves his Dove chocolate so when Mom asked for a chocolate cake that looked like a Dove candy, I thought it was a great idea! The cake, of course, is Devil's food chocolate with a milk chocolate buttercream filling, topped with a chocolate ganash icing. Oh-My! Right on target 02/22/2011
This week's confection project was a dartboard for a 50th birthday party. At first I was worried that I was going to have to draw perfect circles with white icing on black fondant. So worried in fact that I decided to just skip that step all together. I worked with all fondant on this one, and it came together quite nicely. Inside the layer of black fondant is red velvet cake (do you know how tough it is to find red food colour the week after Valentine's Day?) layered with vanilla buttercream. This one really hit the mark! Pretty cake for a pretty girl 02/13/2011
When my friend asked me to make the bithday cake for his wife, he really didn't give me much to go on. When I asked him what she liked, Sephora (which is a high end make-up store) was first on the list. A week before the cake was due, I put on my research hat and headed off to the store to check it out. While looking around and noicing the details on the make up, I couldn't help but notice the prices! I graciously refused any offers of help from the sales girls and booted it out of there once all my info was gathered. The cake itself is just a simple vanilla cake, with vanilla buttercream - the birthday girl's favourite! The best part of the night was watching Sandra slow eat the black sign (like a little beaver knawning on a wooden block) and watching her teeth turn black from the inside out! She loved it. I'm back...ish! It's been a tough couple of weeks technology wise for me. Nnot only did my phone decide to stop working, but my home computer followed suit a few days later. It was a downright walkout of my electronics! I'm stuck posting on this mini laptop, which has its own challenges. Back to the cakes! My client asked me if I "could do this" and gave me a link to the cutest dinosaur picture. I'm not sure of the origin of the picture...who the artist is, but its too darn cute. I readily agreed to make the cake. It wasn't until later that I found out that she actually wanted the dinosaur in 3D (though nothing in the email suggested that). I'm not sure I could have pulled that off, but I still think the cake turned out cute! Every year it is my extreme pleasure to make the birthday cakes for my nieces and nephew. The kids always come up with great requests and I find I do some of my best work for them - I still get compliments on the hot tub cake! This year my niece turned 9 and she wanted to have a sleep over party, complete with nail polish, pop and pizza. I was very much looking over to sleeping over and enjoying the party, but since I wasn't feeling 100%, I stayed for the pizza and glow in the dark nail polish only. Imagine my disappointment that I couldn't stay after hearing how amazing six nine-year-old girls screaming sounds... The girls had a great time and of course, they loved the cake. My nephew (who will hence forth be known as Jube-Jube - thank you girls!) turned 7 this year and opted for a pool party with his friends. Unfortunately, I didn't get invited to this party - because I'm a girl, and since Jube-Jube was smart enough to high-tail it out of dodge for the girl's party, I didn't get to see his reaction to the cake. But, knowing him, he probably loved it. Personally I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I really LOVE my new brick tool! It was super easy to do too. Score!! 11/22/2010
Abhir is one lucky 2 year old! For his very special birthday, his Dad ordered a very special cake for his soccer themed birthday. The bottom layer is marble cake layered with rich, thick real Belgian chocolate ganache. The soccer ball is chocolate cake with Italian buttercream. This is one cake I really wish i could taste! Mmmm left over ganache.... Research really pays off... 09/18/2010
This week started with 2 dozen pretty pink cupcakes to celebrate Jan's soon-to-arrive baby girl. Congratulations Janizelle! More cupcakes followed later in the week when my friend Olga requested some Elmo cupcakes to bring to dinner as a surprise for her friend's son. The week ended with a slightly bigger project. Beth, who's been known to request such awesome projects as the #10 cupcakes and the crawling from the grave cake, asked if I would make a cake that looks like some Palm Bay spritz for her two friends who were turning 29....again. I figured the best way to recreate something, is to have it in front of you. So, I took the difficult task upon myself and bought a 6 pack of the cans, then proceeded to do my research on the balcony. They're pretty tasty! Inside the fondant covered cakes are 8 layers of chocolate cake with yummy French vanilla buttercream sandwiched in between. |
