May 14th was a popular day for first communions, and I'm very sorry to all of the people I had to turn down.  My client booked this day way in advance because she knew she wanted me to make the cake and didn't want to take any chance for disappointed.  I was asked to make a marble cake with vanilla icing decorated with flowers, bread, a rosary and a bible.   I also made some cross shaped sugar cookies decorated with hand pipped grapes.  She also ordered some basic vanilla swirl cupcakes to go along with the order.  All of the decoration on the cake were hand made, except for the bible and the wheat and turned out lovely if you ask me!

Grand Slam! 05/24/2010

About a month and a half ago, I received my first quote request from this very website.  I was very excited, especially since the client was looking for not only just a cake, but cupcakes and cookies to go with it.  After meeting with Sandra and her family to give them a sample of my work, she decided that she wanted to include my peanut butter poppers as well!  All of the flowers on the cake, cupcakes and cookies are hand painted, and the poppers are covered in gold foil to match.  This was a lot of fun to make, and I think it came out perfectly!

Another excitingly busy week, with a couple last minute projects.  The first was Olga's birthday.  I didn't realize until two nights before, so the cake wasn't as grand as I would have wanted it to be.  Next year I'll be able to plan better.

Next was a birthday cake that started small, but kept growing and evolving.  Again, Olga was being a kindhearted, generous person and wanted to order a second tier as a surprise for her friend who had placed the order.

Another surprise order this week was the figure skate cake.  Agnes decided to get something special and unique to celebrate her daughter's first figure skating performance.  Inside the fondant cover, vanilla cake is layered with real whipped cream and fresh strawberries.  Yum!

I apologize for this next picture because the quality doesn't do the cake justice.  I'm not sure if it was my poor picture taking abilities, or the stranger lighting from the storm that day, or if my camera just choked on the colours... This was a beautiful cake for Valerie's first communion.  I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did making it!

My little cousin is getting married this summer and my Mom/Aunts threw her a White Hat shower this weekend.  It was a lot of fun, and I was asked to make some deserts!  In addition to some yummy buttercream cupcakes, I also made some fancy white hat cookies.  The awesome idea came from here (she's amazing!) but I used a mix between fondant and royal icing.  Thanks to Mom for the use of the *beautiful* silver stand!

I'm not the only talented person in the family either.  Far from it.  My Aunt hand made all of the invitations and my Mother hand made all of the fancy white hat white chocolate favours (amoung other things)!  Fantastic party.

Between all of the recent cakes, and losing internet access for 5 days, it's been tough to stay updated!  As a result, this may be a long post...  The first cake was for Lauren's daughter's (Hannah) confirmation. This was another one of those pre-party cakes - for just the family, not the main event.  Apparently, Lauren's Niece Sophia insisted on eating all of the butterflies, and a second piece of cake, which is unheard of for her!

Next was a groom's cake for a co-worker who tied the knot over the weekend (my first Muslim wedding - very interesting!).  Josie and I decided to try a Tuxedo cake - my first.  While I would do some things differently next time, everyone really seemed to like it.

One of my favourite and most tragic projects of the week was Marlee's bugs.  I LOVED Marlee's bugs!!  I made them a week in advance to be sure they would be dry and ok for transport on Friday.  I got used to seeing their cute little faces smiling at me through the plastic container each morning.  So when it came time to put them atop thier final buttercream cupcake resting spots, I wasn't thinking clearly.  I assembled the cupcakes the night before and thinking only of the buttercream, put them in the fridge for the night!  As a result, condensation eventually caught up to the bugs... The bees were loosing their wings and the butterflies melted!!  Sadness. I owe Marlee some butterflies!

Right after that, I had to get to work on a last minute 50th birthday cake for one of my favourite customers, Beth.  She said she wanted something really inappropriate because the poor birthday girl was age sensitive and Beth wanted to push some buttons (she's like that).  We decided to do the crawling from the grave cake.  This was my first attempt at a fondant face/figure.  And, because I felt kind of bad for poor Mary, I wanted to make the cemetery as pretty as possible....

No rest for the wicked, because right after the grave, I started to work on the religious celebration cakes.  First was Hannah's actual confirmation cake (with cookie loot bags) and the second was Erin's first communion cake.  Erin has beautiful strawberry curls, and she and her sister were a pleasure to meet.  I hope I get to do more cakes for them in the future!
